Photo editing

Photo retouching is normally equated with invasive intervention in the image such that its substance is changed and a mediocre photograph is made better. It is also mistakenly believed to have originated with the era of modern photography thanks to digital technologies. This view, typical of the uninitiated, is actually ill-suited to all interventions aimed at retouching a photographic image.

Restoration work, varianting, element modification and photo composition, have always been part of traditional photography since its inception and very often ignored by the public. In fact, most of the images we see today have undergone retouching, whether chromatic, tonal, or structural.

In advertising photography, retouching is the completion of work that extends the possibilities of element control. In fashion photography, retouching is the conformation of subjects to the stylistic idea. In landscape photography, retouching maximizes the emphasis of the scene.

Only journalistic photography should ethically be exempt from photo retouching. Although this topic has been debated for years it has now become an assumption.
